The History of Our Family Farm
O’Donnell Farm was founded on a lifelong commitment to land stewardship, animal welfare, and agricultural excellence.
Our journey began in 1989, when my husband graduated from Vermont Technical College with a degree in Agricultural Business, inspired by his grandfather’s farming legacy in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Determined to build a future in agriculture, we relocated to the Finger Lakes region of New York, where we worked full-time while developing the skills and experience necessary to establish our own operation.
My husband’s professional focus on bovine genetics led him to a position with Eastern A.I., where he collaborated with leading farmers and breeding programs across the region. This exposure shaped our philosophy that exceptional livestock begins with intentional breeding, data-driven decision-making, and long-term animal care. During this time, we partnered with a local producer who offered housing and livestock opportunities in exchange for labor, allowing us to build our first herd from the ground up.
Within a few years, those initial calves developed into a productive milking herd. Through resourceful management and persistence, we exchanged labor for feed, refined our systems, and grew a sustainable farm business. Even while I worked nights in healthcare, our days consistently ended in the barn, strengthening both our herd and our partnership.
A defining milestone came when we relocated to Westfield, Vermont, purchasing our farm.
The quality of the land, facilities, and proximity to family made Westfield the ideal place to establish long-term roots. As a family of four at the time, the move represented both professional opportunity and personal fulfillment.
At O’Donnell Farm, we personally manage nearly all aspects of daily operations. Specialized contractors assist only when necessary for mechanical, construction, or large-scale fieldwork. We maintain a clean, efficient, and visually cared-for landscape while prioritizing herd health, nutrition, and welfare. The milk we drink and the beef we eat come directly from animals raised under our direct supervision.
While agriculture is often viewed as traditional, our management approach is highly progressive and data-driven.
Through artificial insemination, genomic testing, bull proofs, daughter performance analysis, and EBV evaluation, we continuously improve udder structure, feet and leg soundness, milk components, growth efficiency, and marbling potential. These same principles guide our Fullblood Wagyu program, where emerging genetic tools allow us to optimize carcass quality, performance, and long-term profitability.
Our land management is equally precise. Using GPS-guided equipment, field-level soil sampling, and nutrient management software, we apply inputs efficiently and responsibly. We also embraced robotic milking systems to enhance herd health monitoring, reduce labor demands, and improve consistency. Daily performance dashboards provide real-time insights into reproduction, health indicators, fat and protein yields, and overall productivity—information that supports better animal care and management decisions.
Beyond systems and technology, our philosophy remains rooted in respect. We value the individual relationship with each animal and recognize that trust, consistency, and patience are foundational to good farming.
The legacy we hope to pass forward is one of work ethic, responsibility, and land stewardship. While farming is never easy, it is deeply meaningful. Our goal is to serve families with products they can trust, while inspiring the next generation to pursue their own paths with the same integrity and care that built O’Donnell Farm.
